Inspired by one of our local residents, this year Reffley Hall are asking for the community to come together and show their support to anyone touched by pregnancy and baby loss. We would love for adults or children to print off a ribbon template (see link below) , decorate the ribbon and write a short message if you wish. The ribbons will be displayed in the window to share with the community. Once you have finished decorating your ribbon please return it to the hall by posting it in the black post-box near to the small hall entrance or popping into the booking office during opening hours. Chairman’s Report 2019/2020

Over all, the last year up until March 2020 had been a very steady one, which hit a fairly large bump right at the end. However, the real financial and Community significance of this to us will probably not be apparent until this time next year.

As always we have continued to do our best to support the community around us and have been very proactive in the events we run such as Bingos, quizzes, the very successful party in the park , Halloween events and of course the always popular Santa Run. We also chose this last year to spend quite a lot of money on running some extra Xmas events and the family Panto in particular was very well received and enjoyed by all.

Our committee is and has been committed to making sure that we focus on the new challenges ahead and that we do everything in our power to keep the halls open and in use for everyone to enjoy, but I am sure you all realise this is a massive challenge given the current climate. Our members of staff continue to amaze me at their level of dedication and the professional manner in which they conduct the running of the halls, and also themselves when dealing with customers. I often ask hirers to tell me how “ things went” and always receive positive feedback and comments. It would be fair to say that the popularity of our venue and the reputation we now enjoy rest very heavily on their shoulders, and in my opinion we could not do it without them.

Whilst we did decide to put money back into community events this last year, we also undertook the very large project of replacing the entire Reffley Suite floor. This work took approximately one month to complete and cost in excess of £22,000 . We appreciate that this was a huge amount but without it, we would before long , have not been able to safely open our doors.

We have had changes to the committee over this last year, the biggest one being the decision that you could not be a member of staff and also a committee member at the same time. This meant that both Jacky and Emma stood down as committee members, continuing their staff roles.

So as we finish the year we are down to a committee of 8, and as I write this report, I know of 1 member not standing for re election so it may be we start the new year with an even smaller number. I will say that from an estate with in excess of 1000 houses and a population of 3000 plus, the lack of interest in being personally involved in the community or even able to spare any time appears to be a sad indication of the lives we now choose , especially when I look at past and present committee members who have exactly the same calls on their time and resource that I hear being used as common excuses time after time.

It is fair to state that the reduced committee numbers almost certainly will have a knock on effect to the number of events and the nature of the events we can run going forward. But to those of the committee no longer remaining, I thank you for your help, hard work and input over the years and wish you every success for the future , and for those remaining with us I thank you for your continued commitment and support .

The year behind us is over, and we can all look back and feel justifiably proud of what was achieved over that time, the year before us is an unknown in ways we have never had to deal with before, and I believe will present us with some very challenging and difficult decisions. However, I have every confidence that we will come through these challenges stronger and better than before.

Peter Chappell (Chairman Reffley Community Association)
